The cure for abortion…

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was famous for saying “fight abortion by adoption and care for the mother” and it got me thinking, aren’t we so quick to jump on the bandwagon to choose our side Pro-Life or Pro-choice when it comes to the debate about abortion, yet there are very little people who are will to take a stand or offer a viable solution other than “don’t do it”.

Isn’t it funny how quick we are to make a stand point on genocide, human trafficking and family violence in our society when we are removed from it.
It’s not real, it’s over there and we’re here… yet we have a strong opinion on it don’t we… why?
Because it’s a fingerprint of the creator on our soul… we know that it’s not how it should be… it shouldn’t be like this.
Yet when it comes to killing a human life before it’s had a chance to see the world, it’s ALL about us. It’s not about the baby or the life… it’s about what’s convenient for me.

Now I don’t want to reduce the pain some mothers have been through… maybe through rape or other forms of sexual violence… but I want to make sure that people realise that there is another option.

I’m sure people aren’t having abortions just because it’s cool or trendy… but because people think that they can’t house the child… or maybe feel they can’t cope with another baby… or even a baby at all… or even think that this new child will be a constant reminder of their pain.
Yet society pushes them towards abortion…

Could you imaging what the world would look like if we put the same amount of interest in saving a life as we did recycling or saving animals we may never see in rain forests…

There is a wonderful couple called Steve and Emma Dunne who are leading the way in adoption in Nelson, New Zealand.
They’re not interested in just adopting the most beautiful or the cutest… but adopting ANY baby from any mother that needs it… no mater how sick or needy the child is they are willing to adopt.

Steve and Emma started The Jeremiah Trust. The purpose of the trust is to provide some tangible options for every unwanted pregnancy in New Zealand.

Here is some of the ways they help mothers:

1. Legal fees providing potential parents to adopt unwanted children.

2. Advertising for unwanted children to NOT be aborted but to be received in adoption
3. Support for Mothers and Fathers who are prepared to keep a child and carry a pregnancy full term instead of an abortion.
4. To train prospective parents and provide training seminars, one off teaching on issues of LIFE.
5. To provide financial support for orphans in various countries including New Zealand, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Cambodia, Philippines and India.
You see it’s not just the mother that needs your help it’s both the Mother and the baby.
So if you’re a mother who is thinking of abortion as an option… or a family who would like a child in your life that you can love and look after… make sure you check out Jeremiah Trust first.
Wouldn’t it be great to actually have a viable option, rather than just being told not to?

You’re Awesome…

Caps-Lock is FULL OF AWESOME!!1!

Hit the AWESOME button

The word awesome is a bit of a funny word isn’t it?…
Awesome… it’s like “I have some awe… but that’s all”… yet we use it to mean “Wow… that’s more than amazing”

An even funnier word is ‘Awful’… it’s obviously a bad word… yet it would seem it should be a much happier word… “I’m full of AWE”

Either way… I like the word AWESOME… it may seem at times to be over used… but I genuinely like it as a word… there is nothing  better than hearing someone say to you “You’re awesome”… and it feels just as good telling someone “You’re pretty awesome”
It warms up your heart… it’s one of those ‘Awwwwww moment’ words

Yet why do we think of ourselves less than Awesome?

You see not only are you made in God’s image… but you were saved from Sin, even when you weren’t worth saving.
Do you see that?
God really likes you… he thinks that you’re awesome enough to save you, even when you had turned away from him… even when you didn’t want to know him…
And he did what only he could do… you couldn’t save yourself… but God loved you so much that he sent his only son to die in your place.
You see you matter to God… anyone would be happy to take a hit for someone who was good… but for Jesus to DIE for us in our wretched state only shows how much you mean to God.
God thinks that you’re pretty awesome.

So why do we hide away in our own self pity… or knock ourselves down?
The rest of the world tries to knock us down… so why should we?

“let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t.” Romans 12:6 (The Message)

God loves you so much… and not in a cliche sticky sweet way… but God actually likes you… he really likes you!!

He thinks… You’re AWESOME.

I wish you could know that for yourself…

not because of what you’ve done…
or achieved…
or look like…
but because you are God’s masterpiece (Eph 2:10)…  God doesn’t make junk.

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect (Photo credit: drp)

I’m secure in my man-hood when I say… I like butterflies, they are beautiful, colourful, and they float through the soft warm air of your summer.
I especially like how they were once one thing… but now they are something totally different.

It’s like us really as Christians… We are born a caterpillar.
There’s nothing wrong with a caterpillar, they spend there day roaming around and they eat leaves I would have to assume that it’s a pretty cool life… sure there is the odd bird or other enemies that are there to attack you, but ‘hey’ that’s life in any world.

But Butterflies…

They are something else… not only can they walk and do most of the things that caterpillars can do but they’re free from having to walk… they can fly, they can float from leaf to leaf… branch to branch.

Romans 6:3-14 tells us that we, as Christians are dead to our old life… and alive in Christ (we have been ‘reborn’)…
So… if this is the case, why do we spend our time crawling around like the caterpillars that we once were… when we can soar and fly above the fields we fought through?
It doesn’t make sense does it?

But here’s the really cool part… the rebirth process is only the start… it’s only a down payment… it’s an echo of what is to come.
You see we still get aches and pains… we still get our hearts broken… we live in a fallen world.
But 1 Corinthians 15:35-39 tells us that when we get to heaven… we’ll be given a new body… the right type of body for all eternity… no pain… no suffering… no heart ache… no regrets.

‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” – Revelation 21:4

As my Pastor Murray Talbot put it “He will wipe away the tear on your cheek right now, the tears and hurt from your past, and the tears you will give to others… will all be wiped away”
Isn’t that cool…

I like butterflies… they are beautiful, they are colourful…
But what is in store for us is much much much better… don’t you think?

It’s your story…

We all have stories

I was talking to a friend of mine, and I was reminded about the amazing provisions that God had continued to bring into the life of myself and my family.

There have been so many times in my life where our cupboard was bare… and just at the right time someone came with a box of food…
Or when our car had been in need of repair… and just at the right time the money came into our account – the EXACT amount.

I can give story upon story of how God has provided for us at just the right time in so many ways.

Revelation 12 says:

And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony.
And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die – Revelation 12:11

Testimonies remind us that God is still in charge… how?

Because no one can take away the things God has done in our lives… we EXPERIENCED it.

It’s kind of like walking in and seeing your grandmother naked… you can’t UN-SEE things like that… and you can’t un-experience the things that God has done for you.
When we share the things that God has done for us we take away from the enemy his lies telling us that “God doesn’t work in our lives anymore” when we know he does because we have experienced that in our lives.

We have experienced his Grace, we have experienced his healing, we have seen and heard  his answers to prayers… and we can say with all honesty that “God has been with us Thus Far and we know he will continue to be with us.” (1 Sam 7:12)

Often we think that Testimonies are only to do with how we became a Christian… and what God did for us does come into the story of how we became a Christian… but Revelations 12:11 talk about how POWERFUL our testimonies actually are.

One of my favourite testimonies I have heard was in Mark Batterson’s book ‘The Circle Maker’… t goes something like this:

Bob Bagley was a missionary to Africa.  His tribal church was literally meeting under a tree and one day the local witchdoctor cursed the tree and all the leaves withered.  They lost their shade.  They also lost their status!  That curse overshadowed them.  So Dr. Bagley decided to call a public prayer meeting.  He laid hands on the tree and prayed that God would resurrect it.   I love his prayer: “It’s not my name that’s at stake.”  He knew that he couldn’t establish God’s reputation without risking his own!  The rest of the story?  Not only did God resurrect the tree, it became the only tree of its type that yielded fruit twice a year!

Isn’t that great… those sort of testimonies remind us who’s really in charge, and that God is able to do immeasurably more than all I can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20)…

But here is the thing – If we don’t share the way God is at work in our lives, then we’re tempted to think God isn’t working at all.

So what are the stories that YOU have of Gods provisions in your life… God’s Grace etc…

Are you telling people about them… because they are YOUR stories to tell… and another way of overcoming the enemies in your life.

Album Review: Third Day ‘Miracle’

Third Day – Miracle

I have to be honest… This album made me smile.

This was the first Third Day album in a long time, that I think Third Day ‘brought it’ for a whole album… and boy did they ‘bring it’

For me Third Day,  for the last couple of albums had been a  ‘singles’ band… a band that released a great single, and an album filled with Third Day sounding songs that were all a clone copy of each other… however from the very start of this album it feels like Mac Powell and the gang have been given a new lease on life and have started to find new sounds.

The first track ‘Hit me Like a Bomb’ has the band singing ‘”Hear the sound of the sirens ringing/See the world of a life that’s changing
Well you hit me like a bomb” yep… these guy are starting to change too… and it sounds great… it’s melodic and it still rocks. Even the lyrics are more in your face than the band has brought for a while… “well you can drag me away kicking and screaming”…

You’ll find out pretty soon into the album that Third Day have been working at their new sound, and the big thing to come out of it was melodic non lyrical vocals… so lots of “Ohhh’s” and “Ahhh’s” but in a really cool southern way.

The album has got a much more main stream radio feel to it that other albums they have brought… and it’s a sign that Third Day is finally stepping up to the plate it seem to shy away from for a while.
The songs on this album sit somewhere between artist like Train, NEEDTOBREATHE, FUN and Matchbox 20… it’s pretty good.

It’s great to listen to an album and think… “wow that would work as a single”… and then you hear the next track and you think the same again.

Now I have to be honest… when I saw a Third Day album with another dreamy looking cover and cliche album title I thought “Here we go another Christian album with all lyric content and no music that would venture outside of the Christian world of youth groups and Christmas and Easter plays…”

or maybe I had just  resigned myself to thinking that it would be given the usual PowerPoint treatment within the first six month of it’s release in many churches across the world…

Even tracks with more heart felt titles like ‘Your Love is like a River’ or ‘You Are my Everything’  have a real edge and a  pop/rock sensibility without falling into the ‘Third Day sound’ rut of former albums.

The great thing about this album is right in the middle of it sits a track called ‘I need a miracle’… a collection of stories of people needing a miracle, people who found that there was a time in their life when they realised that they can’t do it all on their own… and “Need a Miracle”… no matter who they were or what they had done… it’s a great song that takes you on a journey and a nice focus for the rest of the album.

The album ends just as well as it starts… with tracks ‘For the rest of my life’ and ‘I want to believe in you’ with the latter even bringing the good old fashioned gospel backing vocals that lift the chorus to great heights.

The album finishes ironically with the most Third Day sounding song on the album with ‘Take me  back’… and you realise at this point… just how good they were, and just how much better they have got for this album.

This album is proof that good bands can actually still bring out great music and not rest on their laurels… sure they can still bring out carbon copy songs album after album… but I’m sure that they psalms talk about “singing a new song” and this is exactly what Third have done for this album.
