Does the Bible change for our Culture?

KJV BibleHave you ever read an article… and you were excited because the things that you were reading were really great… until… the writer makes a comment that ruins every thing?

This happened to me yesterday and I’ve been mulling it over in my mind for a while.

The article started of well… it started off about acceptance and trying to solve bullying and how it’s leading more and more people to look at taking their own lives as a way out. The article spoke about people who were likely to be bullied and highlighted gays, fat people and Muslim… it also spoke about how the kids learn from the adults in their lives.

I was saying in my mind… YES, YES YES…

As Christians we should love everyone, we should embrace other peoples culture, we should be against boundaries that divide our communities… YES, YES, YES…

But then… was ruined… in these couple of sentences.

“…we don’t believe that homosexuality is a sin. Your parents are Christians who believe that the Bible is inspired by God, just like people are. And since the Bible is a living thing, it is in its very nature to evolve toward becoming more loving. We are to interact with it, to interpret it with our minds and hearts and souls.”

Wait… hold on?

It’s in the Bibles very nature to evolve toward becoming more loving?

So let me get this right… the Bible changes, depending on how the culture changes?

My wife Emma commented on it by saying “That’s like saying… it’s OK not to obey your parents, just because cultures changed or it’s OK that you are an compulsive liar, because you’re nice…”

I think we’ve got it all round the wrong way…

The Word is unchanging…

“In the beginning the Word already existed.  The Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1

I can’t imagine God creating everything making laws… for him to go “heck what was I thinking… lets just change that to suit you”

You see lets not fool ourselves…

The Gospel doesn’t change because our culture changes.

We change because the Gospel is constant.

We’re not smart enough to change The Bible… we’re far to selfish for that…

I’m thankful that the Bible is constant… it’s stable… it NEVER changes.

  1. then how do you justify the fact that woman no longer where head coverings in church or that there is no longer the practice of feet washing in church? some things in the bible do appear to be the culture of different times, wouldnt you agree?

    • Sorry it took so long to reply.
I did reply back when you posted but foursome reason it didn’t stick, sorry.
It’s a good question… however women in that part of the world still wear their heads covered in church, and people still get their feet washed in church often… in fact the most public of these is the Pope.
However all of that is a red herring…. they are not things that are important…. you have to remember that when Jesus died he broke the need for us to come to God with ceremony but with open hearts. The Bible has changed culture in every nation like no other book in history from laws made, to the way we look at science to the way women are treated.
Women we given an even footing in the scritpures with some being judges… some being leaders and some having key rolls in the Gospel message (something that would have been bypassed if the story was going to be made up in this time as women werent considered important until after
      Jesus came)
