Love or Law?
There seems to be two major schools of thought about how to tell people about God.
LOVE is things like, do good things for people, set a good example, don’t hack them off, give to charity… It seems like its a case of look at me and see what I am doing, and hopefully people will wonder what it is all about… and then magically they will figure out that you are a Christian and all will be right in the world.
The problem with this theory is that often we go too far the wrong way and we forget to tell them the reason why we are so happy. There also seems to be a case of not telling someone they are harming themselves. I mean regardless what your perception of Hell is would you like your best friend to be separated from God?
We love them to DEATH.
So that brings us to the LAW.
People who take this as their only method are usually known for what they are against rather than what they are for… They tell people that they are doing things wrong, they only do things a certain way and they only listen to certain types of people… they don’t even associate themselves with other people in case they are setting a bad example to others.
So are they both wrong?
Actually they are both right and both wrong.
Jesus puts it like this…
let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Hold on doesn’t that sound like the whole LOVE thing that you had just mentioned… Yes it does doesn’t it… UNTIL you hear what Jesus said next.
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
You see it’s not either/or … it’s both/and.
You need to develop a relationship… you need to show people that you care… you need to set an example, you need to SHINE… we ARE different… but it’s a good different. But here is the thing… you have to tell people about what they need to turn away from at some point.
Because when things get tough, you don’t want people to turn away from God, you want them to know that they need to hold tight to their faith… if it was only about love, when the going gets tough, people can easily throw their faith away because they have no understanding of ‘why’ they need to hold tight to their faith.
The LAW shows us how screwed up we are…
LOVE shows us why we are so concerned about them…
It’s a balance… you need to walk the line.
